There are tools and techniques designed to help with modulating and containing destructive anger. Your first line of defense in any conflict in which you or another is becoming hyper-aroused is to practice time-outs. Dealing with your or another’s anger can be quite difficult so it is important to understand the anger process and inoculate yourself against anger and aggression. Dr. Paul Standal has found it very helpful to teach his clients to use both progressive relaxation exercises and positive thought affirmations to reduce hyper-arousal and create a rational inner environment for managing your anger.
